FAQ about Saveggy®

Plant-based protection

Saveggy's plant-based protection is a very thin layer with just two ingredients, rapeseed oil and oat oil. The protection is free from additives. It helps preserve the vegetable's natural freshness and extend its shelf life, all without plastic.

It is produced in Sweden.

Saveggy's plant-based protection is extremely thin and developed to stay on the cucumber and be eaten. It continues to keep the cucumber fresh in your fridge, even after rinsing. If you still prefer to remove it, you can use warm water and a brush.

First, the cucumbers are washed and dried before the plant-based protection is sprayed on in a very thin layer.

Sustainabaility & environment

The amount of plastic used today creates significant problems. Our goal is to reduce plastic usage without compromising on quality or the freshness and crispness of the cucumber. We have developed a more sustainable alternative by replacing plastic with a plant-based protection.

If all consumers in Sweden would choose cucumbers with the Saveggy protection we would save around 130 tons of plastic per year. We continue to reduce food waste because the shelf life is at least as good as with plastic film.

Absolutely! The protection preserves the cucumber's crispiness just as well as plastic film does.

A Saveggy protected cucumber will stay fresh for at least as long as a cucumber wrapped in plastic film, and in both cases, they will last significantly longer than an unprotected cucumber.

Unprotected cucumbers have a shelf life of 3-4 days, while cucumbers with plastic wrap or with Saveggy plant-based protection have a shelf life of 12-14 days. This is under the right storage conditions, i.e. dark and cool.

A cucumber should be stored in a dark and cool place (10-14°C).

Without any protection at all, cucumbers wouldn’t stay fresh for long. A protected cucumber releases less water and retains its crispness. A cucumber wrapped in plastic or coated with Saveggy's plant-based protection lasts up to 9–10 days longer than an unprotected one

Ingredients & information

It contains only fully hydrogenated rapeseed oil and oat oil.

No, it is free from additives. The protection contains only a blend of rapeseed oil and oat oil.

No, it does not contain any gluten because we only use the oil from rapeseed and oats. We purify and test our oils to ensure they contain no traces of gluten or oat protein. If you have celiac disease, you can safely eat vegetables with our plant-based protection.

Our plant-based protection consists of rapeseed oil and oat oil, nothing else. The oils are of very high quality and completely free from oat and wheat allergens. If you are allergic to oats or wheat, you can safely eat vegetables with our plant-based protection.

We collaborate proactively with our suppliers and verify all production batches before the oat oil is used in our plant-based protection. Allergic reactions and celiac disease are triggered by protein structures, and pure oil contains no proteins. To ensure that our oil is pure and free from cross-contamination, we monitor every step of the process. Our tests show no traces of gluten, oat or wheat allergens in the oat oil or our final product. This makes our plant-based protection a safe option for individuals with celiac disease, oat or wheat allergies.

An ingredient list will be available at the point of sale, showing the two ingredients - rapeseed oil and oat oil - that the cucumber is protected with in a very thin layer.

Ask the staff. More and more restaurants are labeling ingredients required by EU law.

About Saveggy

Yes, Saveggy is an innovation company from Lund based in southern Sweden.

Saveggy plant-based protection is a new innovation to the world. If you eat a Saveggy protected cucumber, you are one of the very first to try it out. During summer 2024, we had a test-launch of the product. In 2025 a larger launch is taking place across Sweden.

We, the founders of Saveggy, are based in Lund and have a background in the packaging industry, including experience at Tetra Pak. It all started with a frustration over food waste and plastic pollution, leading us to ask the question: "What if the best packaging is no packaging at all?" In 2020, we partnered with Lund University to develop our plant-based protective coating. Since then, we have dedicated all our time to creating a solution with as few and as natural ingredients as possible, an innovation in harmony with the ecosystem.

We started to develop a protection for cucumbers since they are sold in big volumes in Sweden. 70-90 million plastic-wrapped cucumbers per year are sold in Sweden of which around 90% are plastic-wrapped today. We have already started to develop plant-based protection for other fruits and vegetables.
